'Ice fishing' from a boat will have to do for now - Sandusky Register

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently released an updated ice cover forecast for the Great Lakes, which predicts 80% cover on Lake Erie in February. While the Fall Brawl is finished, it doesn’t mean that everyone has put away their boats for the season.

Walleyes are still being caught while slowly trolling crankbaits such as Bandits and Reef Runners, especially north of Kelleys Island, and some anglers are using ice fishing techniques near the islands.

“Ice fishing” from a boat is as close as we come to playing video games with fish during mild winters.

The video games that I refer to: using a fish finder set on flasher mode to display the images of fish and the angler’s lure in real time.

For those with fish finders without a flasher mode, some take out the portable units that they use while ice fishing, rigging the transducer to the boat in a manner that allows them to see the lures and fish below.

The multiple advantages of ice fishing in a warm shanty on top of ice are obvious for those who have done it both ways, but when Mother Nature continues to serve weekly doses of mild weather, anglers find that they can use their boats in a pinch.

An even cooler high-tech thrill than using a fish finder is catching them while watching them bite at baits within view of an underwater camera. This is mainly effective where ice cover is keeping the water clear.

In my estimation, the locally favorite Swedish pimple is hard to beat as a lure choice. They come in a wide range of sizes/weights that control how far they drift from the boat, ideally still within the cone of the transducer signal.

Other star baits include Jigging Rapalas and an up-and-coming lure called the Shiver Minnow made by Moonshine Lures.

Successful colors include just about every shade made, but many anglers start with the oft-proven prism blues and greens, nickel and gold, fire tiger, chartreuse, orange, red and violet, to name a few.

These lure are typically tipped with shiners to provide scent along with the lure’s enticing action. Call ahead to see which bait stores have bait available. Live shiners are best — most other forms won’t stay on the hook long with anglers jigging the lures up and down.

The excitement of watching your lure rise and fall until a fish chases it and is hooked is worth the price of admission!

Fall Brawl recap

Speaking of the Fall Brawl, the winner of the fully rigged Warrior boat with a value of more than $100,000 was announced by Erie Outfitters, home of the contest. James Atkinson turned in a 31.5-inch walleye that tipped the scales at 12.395 pounds. It was caught 1.5 miles off of Cleveland’s East 72nd Street Pier Marina on the day after Thanksgiving.

For weeks, another contestant was listed on the leaderboard with a heavier fish that was 3 inches shorter, raising speculation that the fish had been altered. Fortunately, the contest rules require that prospective winners take a polygraph test and Atkinson prevailed with a fish having a more realistic length-to-weight ratio.
