CLEVELAND, Ohio — Unseasonably warm temperatures and mild winds have been a bonus for fishermen around the area. The Northeast Ohio rivers and streams are mostly ice free heading into the weekend, and while the rivers reportedly have good numbers of steelhead trout to chase, the bite was fairly slow Thursday.
A good bet for some family fishing has been excellent stockings of foot-long rainbow trout by the Cleveland Metroparks, which last week poured 1,500 pounds rainbows into its lakes, including a few colorful golden rainbow trout, brook trout and brown trout.
A second stocking of hatchery trout is planned for late January or early February in Wallace, Shadow, Ledge, Ranger and Judge’s lakes.
The rainbow trout have been biting on small jigs tipped with brightly-colored PowerBait, maggots and waxworms worked under a very small float.
The winter trout limits are two per day in the rivers and streams, with a 12-inch size limit. There is no size limits at Wallace, Ledge, Judge’s and Ranger lakes, and a three trout daily bag limit. The bag limit increases to five per day at Shadow Lake and the Ohio & Erie Canal fishing area.
Ice fishing on hold: The warm spell has put any thought of ice fishing around Northern Ohio on hold for a week or two. Some of the early hot spots, including the hot crappie fishing around East Harbor, lost their early winter ice cover before it was thick enough to support a fisherman.
Rain and warm temperatures are in the forecast for Saturday, which could trigger a fresh run of steelhead trout up the Vermilion, Rocky, Chagrin, Grand and Ashtabula rivers and Conneaut Creek.
Rocky River minnows abound: The lower stretches of the Rocky River have attracted big schools of emerald shiner minnows, a bonanza for the big steelhead trout but a problem for anglers. It’s hard for fishermen to complete with so much forage, sending anglers upstream on the Rocky River to find success.
Fishermen are relying on spawn bags and jigs tipped with maggots and waxworms, while fly fishermen are working egg patterns and bead-head nymphs.
Casting for walleye, trout: With south winds forecast for the weekend, there’s a good chance evening anglers can cast crankbaits from the Lake Erie piers and breakwalls and catch a trophy walleye, or two. The typical shallow-running plugs, such as the Husky Jerk, Bandit and Smithwick Perfect 10, are casting favorites, as well as Rat-L-Trap and Cordell Spot lipless rattle baits.
Museum has Fly Tying Free-for-All: The Cleveland Museum of Natural History Trout Club is hosting a Fly Tying Free-for-All on Wednesday, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the museum.
There will be several stations set up, with a variety of fly tying demonstrations. Anglers can come and observe the fly tiers, or feel free to bring tools and materials and tie your own favorite patterns. There is no cost to attend, but pre-registration is requested at cmnh.org/troutclub
New Fishing Expo at the Cleveland Boat Show: The Lake Erie Marina Trades Association has teamed with Fishermans Central to debut a large fishing pavilion this year at the Progressive Cleveland Boat Show & Fishing Expo on Jan. 16-20 at the I-X Center. Fishermans Central, the largest fishing tackle shop in the Akron area, will open its second location this spring in Port Clinton.
Special days at the Progressive Cleveland Boat Show & Fishing Expo are Put-in-Bay Night on Jan. 16; Mid Winters Dream, the Great Boating Rendezvous on Jan. 17; Lake Erie Shores & Islands Day on Jan. 18; Women’s Day on Jan. 19; and Family Day on Jan. 20, which is also the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
