The Wapella Fire Department confirm a man in his late 70's was ice fishing with his grandson when he fell through the ice. As of tonight Assistant Fire Chief Jason Karr said the body of the man has not been recovered. The grandson was not hurt and called 911 immediately.
Wapella Fire was called to the 16000 block of Plum Road at a rural residence about 7 miles east of Wapella. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources was also called in to help with the search for the man. The man was located via IDNR sonar, but was unable to be recovered.
The Mahomet Dive crew was on the scene to help recover the body, however, due to safety restrictions caused by lack of daylight they called off the search for the night. They will continue to search for the man in his late 70's Sunday morning at 7:00 am.
Wapella was assisted by Clincotn, Hayworth, and Cornbelt Fire Districts.
