Houghton Lake is a great spot for ice fishing but how does someone know when it is safe to venture out?
Safety is key when ice fishing early in the season.
It is important to be prepared while out on the ice with the appropriate gear for the task.
Kurt Beachnau, owner of Lymans on the Lake, reminded us that no ice is safe ice.
“Just be well aware of the ice thickness around you and don’t assume that a spot on the other side of the lake or even a hundred feet from you is going to be the same. You really have to pay attention to your surroundings. You need to pay attention to any changes that you see in the ice,” said Beachnau.
Check your local sheriff’s office or bait shops for information on local ice safety on the lakes.
